EMERGENCY RULE CHANGE

Due to the change in Masters swimwear rules published by FINA January 16, 2010, and pursuant to Article 601.4.8, the USMS Rules Committee and the USMS Executive Committee have approved the following emergency changes to the USMS swimwear rules. These changes are effective immediately for short course meters and long course meters competition. The changes are effective June 1, 2010 for short course yards
competition. Note that the new swimwear rules no longer allow modesty/privacy wear underneath the competition suit nor zippers or fasteners of any kind except for a waist tie on a brief or jammer. The new swimwear rules will not govern the One Hour Swim being conducted January 2010.

Changes to the swimwear rules are underlined below.

102.14 SWIMWEAR

102.14.1 Design-The swimsuits worn for competition shall be nontransparent and conform to the current concept of the appropriate. The referee shall have authority to bar offenders from competition until they comply with this rule.

102.14.2 Swimwear shall include only a swimsuit, cap and goggles (a nose clip and ear plugs are allowed). Arm bands or leg bands shall not be regarded as parts of the swimsuit and are not allowed.

102.14.3 In swimming competitions, the competitor must wear only one swimsuit in one or two pieces. All swimsuits shall be made from textile materials. Except for open water competitions, for men, the swimsuit shall not extend above the navel nor below the knees, and for women, shall not cover the neck, extend past the shoulder, nor extend below the knees.

102.14.4 Only swimsuits complying with FINA swimsuit specifications may be worn in any U.S. Masters Swimming sanctioned or recognized competition.

102.14.5 Exemptions to the foregoing restrictions may be granted to a swimmer, on a case by case basis, by the Chair of the Rules Committee or designee. Exemptions will be granted only for conflicts due to the swimmer's verified religious beliefs or verified medical conditions.

A Procedures for applying for an exemption will be established by the Rules Committee and posted on the U.S. Masters Swimming website.
B No exemption to these restrictions will be granted for a swimsuit that will give the swimmer a competitive advantage.
C The decision of the Rules Chair may be appealed only to the entire Rules Committee whose decision shall be final and binding on all parties.
102.14.6 Swimmers are not permitted to wear or use any device or substance or swimsuit to help their speed, pace, buoyancy or endurance during a race (such as webbed gloves, flippers, fins, etc.). Goggles may be worn, and rubdown oil applied if not considered excessive by the Referee. Any kind of tape on the body is not permitted unless approved by the Referee.

102.14.7 Advertising-Products involving tobacco, alcohol or pharmaceuticals containing drugs banned under IOC or FINA rules may not be advertised, but the advertiser's name only may be used. Offenders may be barred from competition until they comply with this rule.

Team,

Now that warmer weather is coming back, so should you! The holidays are over. You’ve had your fill of parties, family time and holiday hustling around – it’s time for some swimming with all the good things it brings: stress relief, getting out of the house, exercise and most of all, social time!

We are swimming outdoors in the newly renovated pool. Practice times are the same: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning at 7:00pm. And the water temperature has been running between 80-82 degrees.

And for those that want to compete, we’ve got quite a few swimming opportunities coming up! The meets listed below are ones we’ve attended in the past, or ones that I think would be good to try. You don’t have to attend all of them or even every day of a meet, but if you’re looking to swim in some of the Championship meets, it’s good to get some “practice meets” under your belt.

Feb. 6 / SCY: Daytona Beach Swimming Masters. Daytona Beach FL. Entry deadline: received by Wednesday, Jan. 27
Feb. 13-14 / SCY: Valentine Meet. Clearwater FL. Entry deadline: received by Friday, February 5.
Mar. 26-28 / SCY: Dixie Zone SCY Championships. Orlando FL
Apr. 15-19 / SCY: YMCA Masters Nationals. Ft. Lauderdale FL.
Regarding the meets above: Either the 2/6 meet in Daytona or the 2/13-14 meet in Clearwater are good litmus tests to see where you are with your training. I’m still waiting to hear if St. Pete Masters will be hosting a meet in early March, as they always put on a good one. But, with Dixie Zone Championships in Orlando, it’s a great opportunity we shouldn’t pass up. And finally, we should all be planning to attend the party in Ft. Lauderdale – otherwise known as Y Nationals – in mid-April.

We also need to keep looking forward to this summer. In the recent past, our participation in anything long course has been minimal. With talk about attending USMS Championships in Puerto Rico, for those that are serious about going, here is a list of a few meets/swims to get you prepared.
May 8: Hurricane Man (2.4-miles & 1000 yards). St. Petersburg FL. This is an open water swim. We had over 20 participate last year – let’s get more to go this year. Plus, they have free breakfast and beer when the swim is completed.
May 23 / LCM: Central Florida Marlins Masters Summer Splash. Ocala FL. Entry deadline: postmarked by Saturday, May 15

June 18-20 / LCM: Orlando FL
July 17 / LCM: Central Florida Marlins Masters Summer Splash. Ocala FL. Entry deadline: postmarked by Saturday, July 10
Aug. 9-12 / LCM: USMS LCM Championships. San Juan, Puerto Rico

Details on most of these meets can be found by copying and pasting the following link: http://www.dixiezone.org/Meets.htm#2010meets
If you would like to swim in any of these meets, you need to be a registered Masters swimmer. Please use the following link to register online using your MasterCard or Visa: https://www.clubassistant.com/club/USMS.cfm?l=14

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

See you at the pool!
